A team from the AIDS Control, Gender and Mainstreaming Unit has today, 27th July, 2023 conducted a community outreach to the Kakamega School for the Deaf in a bid to strengthen the existing relationship between the two institutions. The school, which works with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), has been the center for learning sign language to some of the University staff. The team, led by Prof. Gladys Mengich offered an assortment of donations including; essential food products and sanitary towels.

Prof. Mengich pointed out that the school has been the local host for sign language practicals. She added that the visit is crucial to the Unit since it enables them to understand the needs of students with disabilities. Further, she challenged the staff to emulate the University students who were highly praised by the school for the support they have been channeling to the school through donations and communal engagements.

The team was accompanied by the Chairman, Disability Mainstreaming Committee- Prof. Danstone Lilechi who noted that MMUST is the epicenter of Kakamega town, thus a strong collaboration between the institutions will impact the lives of many people living with disabilities in the County. He advocated for actualization of partnership between the two institutions and emphasized the need for conducting training on staff serving in the essential areas especially the customer care center.

The team was received by the school Headteacher- Mr. David Amutabi, Deputy Headteacher- Mr. Isaac Omongo, and Mrs. Florence Sakwa who applauded the MMUST team for its kind gesture towards supporting the school. They encouraged the team to make the visits more frequent noting that it gives the students a sense of belonging to the community.

Other staff from the Unit were: Mr. Daniel Korir, Ms. Eunice Pundo, Ms. Adelaide Imbuka, and Ms. Selpher Sabatia.
